Limited Capacity seats available

The session will start with an overview of the definition and foundations of self regulation. It will provide an understanding of stress and the brain and what that means for ourselves as educators and for our learners. It will then look at how we can support the development of regulation in our everyday classroom routines. We can do this through looking at each child, task design, the learning environment and our relationship with our learners. We will give examples of how we have done this as a collaborative partnership between the OT and classroom teacher. We will describe and give examples of how this has been implemented into a specialized classroom at the CBE.

Classroom Strategies to Support Students with Executive Function Deficits
Limited Capacity seats available

Grade One teachers rate Executive Function as one of the most important indicators of a child’s potential to become an effective student in a school setting.  Executive Functions refers to those brain functions that regulate, control and manage other brain processes such as planning, organizing and deciding what to pay attention to.  When students have lagging skills in the  Executive Functions, academic, social and emotional success is at risk.  Most (if not all) of the common Childhood Mental Health disorders involve a marked deficit in Executive Function skills.  What can be done to support these students in a classroom setting?

This session will review what Executive Functions are, how these skills typically develop, and what teachers and caregivers can do to support a positive developmental trajectory.  Participants will participate in games and activities to support Executive Functions in the classroom.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in Canadian Schools
Limited Capacity seats available

Sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ2S+) youth often encounter multiple risk factors, have fewer protective factors (such as a sense of connectedness to school and family), and experience more bullying, harassment, alienation, suicide ideation, and substance abuse than their heterosexual peers. Over a decade’s worth of research evidence identifies how educational institutions have a legal, ethical, and professional responsibility to respond proactively to the pressing health, safety, and educational needs of sexual and gender minority youth. Dr. Kristopher Wells will lead conversation focusing on the current troubling realities of sexual and gender minority students in our schools, how best to support their complex educational, health, and safety needs, and engage in a discussion identifying promising practices to support sexual and gender minority youth to move beyond simply trying to survive in their school environments to places where they can develop the personal and institutional resilience necessary to thrive.

Challenging Our Perspective: Building The Foundational Alliance
Limited Capacity seats available

Inclusive Education has created concern among educators and support staff who are now seeing that there is a greater need for mental and behavioural health supports in schools. Where were these kids before? There are more complexities each year! How do we support kids with behavioural, emotional, and mental health needs in our schools?
These are the questions I hope to answer by approaching the way in which we encounter and receive our students and their families. What is it about our own perspectives and approaches that may be hindering us from providing all students with a safe, caring, empathetic, and nurturing environment.

To Behave or Not to Behave
Limited Capacity seats available

One of the major challenges many educators are faced with is an ever-increasing number of students with behaviour difficulties. Teachers need to know how to defuse behaviour before it escalates for success in today’s inclusive classrooms.  To Behave or Not to Behave is aimed at providing concrete ready to use preventative strategies to teachers working with students who have behaviour difficulties. The strategies and information presented can be used with a single student, within a large classroom, or in a special education setting.  The session provides educators with a number of preventative strategies that can be creatively modified to fit a magnitude of behaviour difficulties. Blackline masters can be photocopied and used immediately. This session is intended for elementary school educators and focuses on school wide interventions as well as individualized interventions.
